Yes , no racist bigotry and embrace non-discriminatory Multicultural policies
Coronavirus (COVID19) and its xenophobic side effects in Australia are well observed and reported in the media. The most revealing xenophobic reactions are well documented in the Huffington Post (31Jan2020) “Chinese Australians living in Australia have said they have faced a wave of racism both in person and on social media since the coronavirus outbreak”.
Offensive headlines in the Herald Sun and Daily Telegraph attracted backlash through social media with over 50,000 petitioners demanding apologies from the newspaper and got them. Latest incident involved an offensive signboard outside Harvey Norman store. The store apologised.
Racists bigotry and behaviour should not be allowed to surface in any society. We always admired former Prime Ministers the right Hon. Gould Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser, both founders of Australia non-discriminatory multicultural policies, openly preached that we must not let any racist has a hiding place in our society. We must expose them whenever we can. Great to see our Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Leader of Opposition Tony Albanese both stood tall in our Federal Parliament House and did just that on 11 February 2020. The message is loud and clear and similar messages have also been voiced by all State and Territory Governments and Oppositions. All Australians are grateful for it.
Great majority of Australians embrace our very successful non-discriminatory multicultural policies. It is the foundation of our modern Australia. It allows all Australians to live in harmony and shared prosperity. It also instils in everyone the spirit of mutual respect, tolerance and admiration for one another despite our differences in race, religion, gender, culture, language and belief etc
All ethnic minority Australians in the past, at some stages of the developmental history of Australia, have experienced and suffered from some serious discrimination without the protection of our laws. But now we feel safe and secured under the protection of our common non-discriminatory laws. More importantly, we have good governance and Governments to implement the legislation and support our minority citizens so they can be equally proud and share the joy and duties of being an Australian citizen.
Chinese Australians are particularly appreciative and grateful in current situation, in the mid of Coronavirus epidemic because small number of ignorant racist citizens might use this opportunity to blame and denigrate us. However we still have to educate them for the safety of all others in our society.
