The Coronavirus outbreak was first reported in Wuhan City in China's Hubei Province, in December 2019. Experts have attributed the outbreak to a novel coronavirus that has since spread across China and abroad.
The current status of the epidemic in China: Confirmed cases: 6,078 with 70 abroad; and the death toll at 132. The human to human transmission is confirmed. Health expert say the virus has the potential to mutate. However do not panic as most cases proven to be curable. The mortality like any flu epidemic is mainly restricted to a small group of weak and sick patients who have other comorbidities.
A total of 7 cases in Australia has been confirmed and no mortality has been reported.
China’s response to the Coronavirus has been exemplary: The Chinese authorities are trying their best to contain the virus from spreading locally and overseas. An incredible task is the building of a 1,000 bed hospital in Wuhan with a fews weeks and opening on Feb 3. For an appreciation of the altruistic attitude of the health workers who gave up Chinese New Year celebration to care for the infected and containing of the disease
Some Australian authority call for compulsory quarantine of all Chinese students returning from China is overreached and a panic move, not workable in our democracy. The correct approach would be asking people who have returned from Wuhan or contact with people from Wuhan, to voluntarily quarantine themselves at home for 2 weeks as a public service for the community. It is too early to press the panic button and we should wait for WHO guidance.
Despite the deadly threat of the virus, it is heartening to see that medical and scientific people all over the world have united to fight against the common enemy, the Coronavirus which knows no boundaries or racial preference. The good will of nations including the US in trying to assist China to combat the spread of the disease far outweighs the important of geopolitical conflicts.
The Australian Government proposing to send Australians from Wuhan to Christmas Island could be an abuse of human rights. Since the majority could be Chinese Australians, it could be perceived as racists. Why not revamp Manly Heads Quarantine Station as the alternative if such drastic action is necessary.
Finally, we believe this Coronvirus epidemic is serious but we have seen much worse flu epidemic outbreaks before. The Governments around the world should assist one another as usual. We are now all world citizens with ease of international travel and enormous amount of interaction between international communities. Any epidemic affects everybody. We should tackle any epidemic with calm, international mutual support and launching timely public health education to stop and prevent further spread of any epidemic.
Finally, we believe better coordination by public health services with advice from WHO and systematically and professionally approach the Coronavirus epidemic will eventually solve the problems we are facing Australians included.
